On November 21, 2014, Jared Ramella, was involved in a tragic accident while riding his motorcycle. A vehicle failed to yield the right of way, which caused serious damage and left him paralyzed because of multiple spinal cord injuries.
The doctors insist there is little to no chance that he will ever recover from his injuries but his family believes there is always room for faith and hope of recovery.
Regardless of the end result, Jared will be wheelchair-bound for the foreseeable future, according to his family.
“Although we as a family were not prepared to handle the financial burden, we are steadfast in our drive to provide Jared with the best medical care possible to give him a fighting chance at walking again,” said Jared’s sister, Amanda Marrero.
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover long-term rehabilitation for spinal cord injury patients. Therefore the cost must come from other sources.
“We are looking for friends, family, and local businesses to take part in Jared’s Road to Recovery. On behalf of the Ramella family, we are excited to invite you to join a fun-filled day of golfing games, food, and drinks”, said Marrero.
“We are hosting our 6th annual golf tournament at Summerfield Golf Course on Saturday, April 23, shotgun start at 12:30 pm registration begins at 11 with pre-party bloody marys, screwdrivers, and mimosas. We look forward to having you take part through sponsorship, raffle donation, or an amazing day of golf,” Marrero added.
The golfer rate for this event is $95 and includes golf and cart, lunch on the course, dinner at the 19th hole party, beer on the course, raffle tickets, and a personal cooler.
“We are a family hosting a golf tournament at first to support my brother with his medical needs and the expenses of physical therapy, which has evolved. Unfortunately, physical therapy expenses are not covered by insurance. Through this tournament, we are able to help not only Jared but other families that are facing the same challenges,” said Marrero.
The annual tournament is in conjunction with the Tighten the Drag Foundation.
Tighten the Drag Foundations’ mission is to extend the opportunity for recovery and better quality of life for those suffering a paralyzing Spinal Cord Injury as a result of an accident. Every year in the United States between 250,000 and 400,000 people suffer spinal cord injuries.
Their road to recovery is long. Keeping a positive attitude and staying active is so important. The average newly injured person with a spinal cord injury will incur 2.9 million dollars in medical costs in their first year. The average yearly medical costs after the first year can be $400,000 up to $750,000 depending on the level of injury.
Tighten the Drag Foundation works hard to help provide these families with financial relief and most importantly information and guidance on navigating the challenges that come with spinal cord injuries. This foundation was instrumental in helping my family navigate such challenges.
“This is why we feel it is so important to give back to a foundation that helps other families that may not have the resources to do so,” said Marrero.
This year’s event will take place at the Summerfield Crossings Golf Club, 13050 Summerfield Blvd., Riverview. Check-in is at 11 a.m., with a shotgun starting at 12:30 p.m.
“Summerfield Golf Club is the only course in our area that allows those with disabilities the opportunity to be active in a sport they love, golf,” said Marrero.
“You don’t want to miss this one,” Marrero said. “Hands down, it’s the most affordable, fun-filled tournament in town. We always have a blast!”
