U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney apparently is doing everything she can to earn the name RINO – Republican in Name Only.
Separate stories on Monday revealed why Cheney has become a pariah among the GOP voters in Wyoming – the state she represents and which went for former President Donald Trump in 2020 by a 70-27 margin.
Liberals embrace Cheney because she voted to impeach Trump over the Jan. 6, 2021, riot and has emerged as a leading Trump critic. She also accepted Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s request to sit on the special committee investigating the riot.
CNN reported on Monday that Cheney was to be the guest of honor at a fundraiser Monday evening attended by prominent anti-Trump Republicans. Utah Sen. Mitt Romney was slated as the featured speaker. Romney, former President George W. Bush, and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, have all raised money for her.
CNN added that many anti-Trumpers are touting Cheney as a GOP presidential candidate in 2024.
The fundraiser was held in Northern Virginia – which fed into the narrative pushed by Harriet Hageman, Cheney’s Trump-endorsed opponent in the House primary in Wyoming.
According to Fox News, Hageman released a new campaign ad about Cheney that called for Wyoming voters to “send her home, to Virginia.”
Cheney is “not representing Wyoming, she’s not representing our values,” the ad says. It includes a quote from Cheney, who said in part, “I can tell you that the single most important thing, though, is to ensure that Donald Trump is not the Republican nominee and that he certainly is not anywhere close to the Oval Office ever again.”
Hageman’s campaign also set up a mock campaign website entitled “Cheney for Virginia.”
The fake website adds that Cheney “understands the priorities of Northern Virginia.” Those include “funneling money to the military-industrial complex, listening to big dollar DC lobbyists, and fighting for special interest groups.”
But Politico on Monday also reported that Cheney is looking to Democrats and independents in Wyoming “to save her hide.”
In her supposed home state, Cheney has avoided speaking to deep-red parts of Wyoming, and is sticking with canned events sponsored by allegedly bipartisan groups, Politico noted. At one next week she will only take pre-selected questions, and is charging people $10 a seat for the honor of hearing her.
Politico quoted Mary Martin, chairwoman of the Teton County Republican Party. Martin was one of the three GOP leaders who unsuccessfully bucked the state party on censuring Cheney for dissing Trump.
Now, Martin is dissing Cheney.
“She was absolutely invited to come and present what her facts were [about impeaching Trump], to defend why you are doing this and instead she opted to call the Republicans radicals, which has made people upset within the party,” Martin said.
“She’s been MIA since Jan. 6. And what we all truly believe is that the Wyoming seat is a stepping stone to running for president in 2024 and she needs to get Trump out of the way. And to raise money, she’s using the anti-Trump commentary,” Martin added.
Politico noted that Democrats in Wyoming are openly urging their fellow liberals to switch to the Republican Party to vote for Cheney, which could keep her in Congress.
Politico added that Cheney is not openly encouraging these groups.
But in the bid to keep her Beltway job, she also is not discouraging them – unlike Trump, who endorsed a measure to ban crossover voting. The bill would have prohibited voters from switching parties within three months of the election. It died in the legislature last week.
