Law may allow guns in churches

Report: As Legislative Session Winds Down, Democrats Fail Imposing Gun Control In Florida

On Sunday gun-control advocates from the group Moms Demand Action held protests in 10 cities to, well, demand action on Florida gun control.

Rebecca Darnell, a rep of the MDA’s Gainesville chapter, expressed her frustration that the National Rifle Association’s leaders refuse to get behind “any” new gun laws.

“I think they’re so focused on not wanting any gun laws that they don’t want to entertain any idea that there would be any gun safety laws,” Darnell told the Independent Alligator, the University of Florida’s campus newspaper.

As it turns out, gun owners in Florida can be grateful that Republicans in the Legislature don’t want any new gun laws either.

Florida Politics reported on Wednesday that 11 gun-control bills filed by Democrats failed without even receiving a committee hearing.

“With committee meetings concluded except for special meetings permitted by chamber leadership, the bills are officially dead in the water,” Florida Politics noted.

Those Democratic bills required approval from the GOP chairs of those committees to be heard. But they were rebuffed, the website noted, as “Republican committee chairs and leadership … have signaled support for relaxing gun control regulation, not strengthening it.”

With their bills, Democrats sought, for example, a ban on large-capacity magazines and “military-style” weapons. They also wanted mandatory gun lockers for homes with children, and requiring gun dealers to give buyers brochures about gun safety.

Other bills would have mandated that all transfers and sales of guns be handled by federally licensed dealers, or permitted local governments to impose their own gun-control regulations.

In addition, some of the other anti-gun bills filed by Democrats would have required background checks for buying ammunition, and prohibited possession of “unfinished” receivers.

It’s doubtful that Democrats and MDA would have gotten the kind of action they were demanding even if those Republican committee chairs had allowed the bills to move forward.

GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has been endorsed by the NRA, and has announced that he is steadfastly committed to protecting gunowners’ rights.
