Rumors surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s behavior and mental health have reemerged since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to several reports, igniting speculation among figures close to the Russian president.
“He has withdrawn into himself a lot during the past two years. He has become distanced from the bureaucratic machinery, from the establishment, from the elite,” Tatiana Stanovaya, founder of political analysis firm R.Politik told The Times. “He spends a lot of time alone stewing in his own fears and thoughts.”
“We were told to enter Ukraine and exterminate a battalion of military and civilian Nazis. As soon as we entered we were fired upon. I did not fire because we had no communication with the commander at all.. he shouted something but I couldn’t hear,” said the Russian Soldier.
Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, has faced several setbacks. While Russia has made steady territorial gains, it has yet to take Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv, and Russia was hit with severe economic sanctions by the United States and the EU over the past few days.
Russian soldiers that have either surrendered or were captured by Ukrainian forces seemed to be in the dark about the invasion until they were thrown into battle.
“Ma, I’m Ukraine, In captivity” Which captivity how??” “We were told we were going to DNR and LNR as peacekeepers but a war started. As it turns out, we are the aggressor. Please call my precinct and tell them I’m here,” said the young Russian soldier to his mother.
“We were on military exercises.. then they moved us to the border, and suddenly we had to cross it. We were told that refusal to follow orders is treason and we will go to jail for 15-20 years,” said the young Russian sniper.
Andrey Kortunov, director of the Russian International Affairs Council, said Saturday that Putin’s behavior, particularly his decision to invade Ukraine, completely blindsided top Kremlin officials.
“I would say that many of us in the foreign office were surprised and I would say shocked and I would even say devastated to see what is happening,” Kortunov said.
