HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL. – Betty White was famous for her roles in the “Mary Tyler Moore Show’’ and “Golden Girls,’’ but she was also well-known for a life spent advocating for the welfare of animals.
The actress, who died Dec. 31, would have turned 100 on Monday. To honor her legacy and decades of helping animals, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center will waive all fees for the first 100 dogs and cats adopted beginning Saturday, Jan. 15.
The Pet Resource Center, 440 N. Falkenburg Rd., Tampa, FL 33619, will be closed on Jan. 16 and 17, but the Betty White Challenge adoption offer will continue until 100 pets are adopted.
Dogs and cats at the shelter are microchipped, vaccinated, registered, and spayed or neutered.
Since White’s death, a social media movement, #BettyWhiteChallenge, has spread rapidly, encouraging people to donate to animal shelters in White’s honor. The Pet Resource Center is not requesting money but would gladly accept pet treats, toys, and comfort items. A list of suggested pet items can be found here.
Items can be dropped off or purchased online and mailed to the pet shelter.
The Pet Resource Center is the only open-admission shelter in Hillsborough County, meaning it accepts dogs and cats regardless of breed, size, or medical condition. Adoption hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Visit the center or search online to view hundreds of adoptable animals.
