Technology allows us to improve performance and processes, across many sectors, including law enforcement. There are so many ways that tech can help the police and other law enforcement professionals to enhance their operations. Let’s explore a few of the top technologies that law enforcement professionals are using today.
1 . Facial Recognition
Facial recognition can be a useful technology for law enforcement professionals. The technology is helpful to improve safety and security, aiding police officers to pursue and detain criminals.
Despite the positives, there is still much controversy about using facial recognition technology. Some cities, such as San Francisco decided to prevent police officers from using the tech, ‘amid concerns about privacy and false matches,’ (The New York Times, 2021).
2. Police Robots
Law enforcement agencies are now using robots to support them with different tasks. Robots can be used to carry out dangerous tasks, from entering hazardous environments to detonating bombs. In Dubai back in 2017, the police assigned robotic officers to the streets. ‘These robots, which are located mainly at tourist spots around the city, are able to perform a limited set of capabilities. Equipped with a computer touch-screen they allow people can report crimes,’ (Forbes 2019).
3. Thermal Imaging Tech
Thermal imaging technology is incredibly useful for law enforcement. Thermal cameras work by using infrared images and detecting heat. These cameras can allow police officials to track suspects in darkened buildings or environments. The same tech is used for dtnvs night vision goggles, often used by military or police officers. Night vision goggles use optoelectronic image tech. When the light goes into the lens it is transferred to a digital signal with the help of a semiconductor. From here the digital image is magnified and enhanced, before being sent to the LCD display.
4. Drones
Drones are often used by law enforcement, these are helpful to view a crime scene, conduct research, and support rescue processes. Drones can also be useful for tasks like crowd monitoring and accident reconstruction. Advanced drones often feature mapping software in 3D, and thermal imaging technology. Drones are useful to survey high risk situations, helping police officers to stay away, unless completely necessary.
5. Artificial Intelligence
As IoT expands an increasing amount of data is analyzed, as you can imagine this is extremely useful for law enforcement professionals. According to Forbes, ‘AI technology is being used to enhance the search of image and video footage.’ Police officers are using cameras to survey areas which cannot easily be covered on foot. Video tech is useful for surveillance purposes, particularly at large events, or in public places.
AI can also be deployed to support ‘crime forecasting’. The idea is that artificial intelligence algorithms are used to analyze data, and predict when and where crimes are the most likely to take place. With data like this, agencies ensure that they allocate their resources properly.
With the help of these technologies, police and military professionals can support progress across their operations, and enhance their successes.
