A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was killed in a collision with a semi-truck while pursuing a felon in South Florida on Friday morning.

According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department, Trooper Zachary Fink, 26, died Friday morning while attempting to apprehend a felon on Interstate 95.

According to FHP, the felon Fink was pursuing attempted a U-turn, prompting Fink to execute one, resulting in a crash with a semi-truck.

Troopers say the semi-truck driver was also killed in the crash. The pursuit continued, and the suspect crashed his car and fled the scene.

According to police, an adult black man was apprehended at the scene in connection with the pursuit.

Florida Gov. DeSantis said on X, “Our hearts go out to the family of FHP Trooper Zachary Fink, who was killed in the line of duty while attempting to detain a fleeing felon in St. Lucie County. @CaseyDeSantis and I are praying for the Fink family and the entire FHP community.”

“Trooper Fink is a hero. Trooper Fink died in the line of duty,” said Dave Kerner, the executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. “As his stepmother relates to me, since he was six years old, all he’s ever wanted to do was help people.”
