Authorities in South Carolina have recovered an additional 24 monkeys that escaped from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center last week. This brings the total number of recovered primates to 25.

The remaining 18 monkeys are believed to be in a group near the facility and are expected to remain in the area overnight. Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, keep doors and windows closed, and avoid approaching the animals.

The escape, which occurred on Wednesday, was attributed to human error by Alpha Genesis CEO Greg Westergaard. A caretaker failed to secure two doors during a routine feeding and cleaning process, allowing the young monkeys to escape.

The recovered monkeys are currently under veterinary care and are reportedly in good health. The Alpha Genesis team, along with local authorities, will continue their efforts to capture the remaining animals.
