Two Pennsylvania men, Naim Newsome-Bostick, 27, and Nadir Gray, 22, have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a violent armed robbery that occurred in September 2022, U.S. Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero announced.

The sentencing took place in the United States District Court before Judge Mark A. Kearney.

Newsome-Bostick was sentenced to 160 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Gray received a 92-month prison sentence, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.

On September 14, 2022, Newsome-Bostick and Gray orchestrated an armed robbery targeting a man they believed to be a marijuana dealer. Armed with a firearm, the pair forced the victim into their vehicle in West Philadelphia. During the ordeal, the defendants robbed the victim of his Rolex watch, wallet, and $3,000 in cash.

While the victim was held at gunpoint, the defendants drove around the area. During this time, the victim began to resist and fought back against one of the men in the backseat of the vehicle. Amid the chaos, the car crashed into a parked vehicle. As the victim tried to defend himself, Newsome-Bostick shot him three times before he and Gray fled the scene.

Philadelphia police quickly responded and transported the victim to a local hospital, where he received treatment and eventually recovered from his injuries.

Newsome-Bostick was apprehended later that day by Philadelphia police. Gray was arrested nearly a year later, in September 2023, by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Both men pleaded guilty to attempted Hobbs Act robbery, acknowledging their roles in the violent crime.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Romero emphasized the commitment of law enforcement to hold violent offenders accountable.

“Anyone who thinks they can carry out an armed robbery in this city and get off scot-free should take a good look at this case,” Romero said. “My office, the ATF, and the Philadelphia Police Department will continue to prioritize and prosecute these violent crimes — no matter who the victim may be — and we’ll see to it that the perpetrators are held accountable.”

Eric DeGree, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF’s Philadelphia Field Office, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the recklessness of the crime.

“For the sake of some cash and a watch, these criminals kidnapped their victim at gunpoint, threatened his life, and shot him three times,” DeGree said. “The victim is lucky to be alive, and the defendants are lucky to not be facing murder charges. Working with our law enforcement partners, ATF will continue to bring justice for the victims of violent crime and help make our communities safer for all.”
