HIGHLANDS COUNTY, Fla. – Highlands County Sheriff’s Office detectives are currently investigating a pair of unrelated shootings that took place 12 hours apart in the southern end of the county.
According to deputies, the first was reported on Saturday at 11:39 p.m. at the BP station at the intersection of US 27 and SR 70.
When deputies arrived, they discovered 42-year-old Manuel Benitez Reyes Guzman inside a vehicle with a gunshot wound to the head.

He was airlifted to a trauma center and was in critical condition, according to officials. The shooting reportedly happened after a verbal altercation. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.
On Sunday morning at 11:21 a.m., deputies responded to a home on Josephine Ave. in the Highway Park area of Lake Placid, where 57-year-old Arthur Scurry Jr. was discovered deceased after being shot multiple times.
The incidents are not related, deputies say.
