In a significant development, two 14-year-old girls were arrested last week in connection with the murder of 93-year-old Joanne R. Johnson last September.
The arrests follow a collaborative investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the Augusta Department of Public Safety, and the FBI.

Johnson was found deceased in her home at 1711 Robbins St. in Augusta on September 3, 2023, by a family member. Authorities believe the murder occurred between the evening of September 2nd and the evening of September 3rd.
The two teenagers, both from Augusta, are currently being held at separate juvenile detention centers on charges of first-degree murder.

Formal charges are pending, and the investigation remains ongoing. No connection has been identified between the accused and the victim at this time.
