14-Year-Old Leads Monroe County Deputies On High-Speed Chase Through Big Coppitt Key

BIG COPPITT KEY, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy from Big Coppitt Key was arrested Saturday night after leading Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies on a pursuit through residential streets.

Fernando Junior Esteban was charged with fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, and driving without a valid license.

The incident began at approximately 11:17 PM on Shore Avenue, when deputies attempted to stop a Nissan Xterra for failure to stop at a stop sign. However, Esteban, the sole occupant and driver, fled the scene.

The pursuit led deputies through multiple side streets, with Esteban reportedly driving on a sidewalk at one point and reaching speeds of 50 mph.

Esteban finally stopped the vehicle on Riviera Drive near his residence. He then attempted to flee on foot, pulling away from deputies, but was quickly apprehended.

No injuries were reported during the pursuit or arrest.
