A 13-year-old Florida boy died at Fishermen’s Hospital Tuesday following a free-diving incident, according to officials.
“This is a heartbreaking and tragic case,” said Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”
When the incident occurred, the juvenile was spearfishing with a 13-year-old friend at 3 p.m. in approximately 25 feet of water, approximately eight miles south of Duck Key.

A good Samaritan mariner transported him ashore to Marathon, where he was taken to the hospital.
While foul play is not believed to be a factor in the incident, that remains under investigation, deputies say.
