In a successful joint operation, the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard rescued seven mariners from a sinking Iranian commercial vessel in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday.
The mariners, five Iranians and two Indians, were aboard the M/V SHAYESTEH, an Iranian-flagged vessel that was flying a Qatari flag, a common practice when in Qatari territorial waters. The vessel began taking on water and issued a mayday call, reporting a significant list.

Responding to the distress call, personnel aboard the USS DEVASTATOR (MCM 6) and the USCGC CLARENCE SUTPHIN JR (WPC 1147) rushed to the scene. The mariners had abandoned their sinking vessel and were safely rescued. The M/V SHAYESTEH has since sunk.
The rescued mariners are currently onboard the USCGC CLARENCE SUTPHIN JR, receiving medical care and support.
